DIY: a new skirt for my cottage kitchen sink

Happy new year, friends! I hope your transition to 2018 was a good one. Mine definitely was – I was quite content to spend NYE and NYD at home, because of the absolute frigid temperatures here. It has been below zero for a few days now, and that makes me so much less likely to venture out when I don’t have to!

I spent some time taking down most of the Christmas decor, and I have to say that as much as I loved all the fru-fru, I also like the fresh feeling once it’s all put away. I work a regular 9-5 job so I had Monday off (actually on the 2nd I start a brand new job!), and I took the opportunity to complete the first DIY project of the year: I sewed a new skirt for the opening under my kitchen sink!

Here is the old one – nothing really wrong with it, as you can see, but I was just ready for a change.

I had a bit of fabric all picked out but as I was putting laundry away I came upon this pair of sweet thrifted pillowcases.

They have wonderful details, including a wide white border and the prettiest blue checked piping between the border and the main fabric. (They were a thrift-store find, two for $1.99; the brand is Liz Claiborne.)

I realized that one of them, if opened up flat, would be just the right amount of fabric for a new sink skirt! The one I decided to use also had some sort of red stain on the border – I knew I could fold that part under to make a casing at the top, so it would never be seen.

I started by cutting carefully down the side, eliminating the sewn side seam but not cutting away too much fabric. I opened up the bottom the same way so that I had a flat piece of fabric. Then I just hemmed up the two sides and bottom, and folded some over at the top to make the casing for the tension rod that is used for hanging.

So yes, it was just that easy, and took me less than an hour! Here’s the finished skirt!  Isn’t that piping pretty?

What a great kick-off to the year, to have one small project already done! How did you celebrate New Year’s Day?

Tablescape round-up 2017

Earlier this year Greg built a beautiful new top for my curb-find kitchen table, in the harvest style I had been envisioning.

With plenty of tabletop “real estate” to work with, I was finally able to begin styling some fun tablescapes using the many dinnerware patterns and vintage items I had acquired. Here’s a quick peek (with links back to the original posts) of the pretty tables I had fun creating this year!

In May I featured square dishes called Serape for a fun and festive Cinco de Mayo table.

I also shared a pretty table for Mother’s Day featuring “Butler’s Pantry Gourmet” by Lenox.

I had purchased these cute Pier 1 “sliced orange” plates (featured in August) because of their bright citrus color. I re-donated them a few months later, and recently I saw them on the shelf at the same Goodwill where I’d donated them. It took all I had NOT to re-purchase them!

Then in September, not quite ready to let go of Summer, I set a couple of late-summer tables that helped transition into Fall with faded floral colors and Autumn textures.  This one featured Norway Rose platters by Cunningham & Pickett

…and this one featured “Florence” by the Pope Gosser Company, and the green “Soreno” by Anchor Hocking.

I had given in to Fall by the time Thanksgiving rolled around, so I styled this holiday table using both Harvest Time and Windsor Fruit by Johnson Brothers, and a most interesting tablecloth!

Finally, in December, I shared two wonderful tables that (hopefully) captured the magic and majesty of Christmas. This one featured World Bazaar’s “Christmas Ribbon” in a table with a natural woodland feel:

… And this one was all a-shimmer with a set of stunning gold-rimmed dinner plates (maker unknown), my newly acquired gold-tone flatware, and lots of golden touches around the table.

Throughout the year, my tablescaping experience evolved such that one of my favorite shots of each table was taken at the very end, when items were gathered up to be put back into the cupboards. I like the “put-away shots” as much as the actual table settings!

I’ll be creating and styling more pretty tables in 2018; I have two already planned for January! Hope you’ll pop back in to check them out!

PS – As this blog grows, you’ll always be able to get links to all the tablescapes by clicking on the category called “tablescapes” in the right-hand column of the blog. Easy, right?

Holiday tablescape: the Golden Glow of Christmas

This is my second Christmas tablescape this year. To see the first one, see my earlier post featuring Christmas Ribbon by World Bazaar.

This year, really for the first time ever I think, my Christmas decor seems kind of unified. I tried to stay loosely within a color scheme of pink, gold, and white (a touch of silver here and there could not be helped… “Silver and Gold,” after all…), and as I look around I feel a sense of comfort in the loveliness that surrounds me.

Not that there was ever anything wrong with un-unified… no, I loved the mish-mash of Christmases past when my daughter was little. Tree decorations were handmade, my collection of snowmen was growing, the living room had an almost-Victorian look to the handmade garlands while the bathroom was more of the woodland/”lodge-look.”

But this year it’s definitely more unified, and it feels almost like a hug – maybe that’s just because the furniture looks cozy covered in chenille bedspreads!

Anyway, I knew that I wanted to carry the pink and gold theme into a Christmas tablescape. But, where my tree and decor are mostly focused on pink, I wanted the table to really shimmer – to be rooted in gold. I had no idea how I was going to achieve that with what I had on hand, until I walked into a thrift store back in early December and found these show-stopping dinner plates.

No maker stamped on the back – just an indication that the amazing border and all the gold scrolling around it is 22k gold. Right then and there I knew they would be the basis of my Golden Christmas tablescape. The touch of pink comes from a single element – the glassware, also a thrift-store find, with handpainted poinsettias.

I’ll be honest – I thought the table looked “just okay” when I first stepped back and looked at it. That was on a Friday night – I had set it up with the intention of taking photographs on Saturday morning, in the daylight.

But I couldn’t resist lighting the candles, and when I snapped a few photos in the candlelight, the whole thing took my breath away – the gold was glinty and shimmering, just like I’d imagined. It was beautiful!

The next morning I snapped my first few photos with daylight filling the dollhouse, and it looked so pretty in the pictures that I could hardly believe this beautiful thing – this set table – was in my home. I know it sounds ridiculous to be so overcome by a simple tablescape set for a meal – but it was the very loveliness I had been hoping to create.

So with all that gushing out of the way, let me take you on a tour around the table!

The place setting includes the stunning thrift-store 22k gold-shouldered dinner plates and als0-thrifted gold-trimmed bowls by Stetson in the “American Beauty” pattern. Napkins are in a simple rose fold nestled in each bowl.

The glassware was also a thrift-store find: four hand-painted water goblets with lovely poinsettias in a deep coral pink and ivory.

Are you as surprised as I am to see that we have a different set of flatware on the table? For years now the only set I’ve owned has been my hard-working vintage Oneida Chandelier – a gift from my Aunt Hazel. But I’ve had gold-tone flatware on my thrifting list for quite awhile, and late this Fall I scored big with 26 pieces of the electroplated Americana Golden Heritage by International Silver. I was delighted to finally use it in a tablescape!

Every piece in lovely condition!

The flatware set also included a few serving pieces, so I have set them at the ends of the table along with Royal Worcester 8-inch plates in the “Golden Anniversary” pattern. These are actually part of two trio sets (cup, saucer and snack plate) that were also found at Goodwill.

For our centerpiece, again we are using inexpensive and thrifted items – the arrangement consists of a pretty FTD ivory sleigh with gold accents, a pair of interesting counter-weighted brass candlesticks, and two votive holders (actually toothpick holders) that are antique Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG – the predecessor of Depression Glass). Filler items include faux greenery and ornaments from my stash, and pretty plastic snowflake ornaments from Dollar Tree.

I love how this tablescape brings in the shimmer and sparkle of Christmas, and yet also practically glows in warm gold when the sun hits it just right.
