Tablescape round-up 2017

Earlier this year Greg built a beautiful new top for my curb-find kitchen table, in the harvest style I had been envisioning.

With plenty of tabletop “real estate” to work with, I was finally able to begin styling some fun tablescapes using the many dinnerware patterns and vintage items I had acquired. Here’s a quick peek (with links back to the original posts) of the pretty tables I had fun creating this year!

In May I featured square dishes called Serape for a fun and festive Cinco de Mayo table.

I also shared a pretty table for Mother’s Day featuring “Butler’s Pantry Gourmet” by Lenox.

I had purchased these cute Pier 1 “sliced orange” plates (featured in August) because of their bright citrus color. I re-donated them a few months later, and recently I saw them on the shelf at the same Goodwill where I’d donated them. It took all I had NOT to re-purchase them!

Then in September, not quite ready to let go of Summer, I set a couple of late-summer tables that helped transition into Fall with faded floral colors and Autumn textures.  This one featured Norway Rose platters by Cunningham & Pickett

…and this one featured “Florence” by the Pope Gosser Company, and the green “Soreno” by Anchor Hocking.

I had given in to Fall by the time Thanksgiving rolled around, so I styled this holiday table using both Harvest Time and Windsor Fruit by Johnson Brothers, and a most interesting tablecloth!

Finally, in December, I shared two wonderful tables that (hopefully) captured the magic and majesty of Christmas. This one featured World Bazaar’s “Christmas Ribbon” in a table with a natural woodland feel:

… And this one was all a-shimmer with a set of stunning gold-rimmed dinner plates (maker unknown), my newly acquired gold-tone flatware, and lots of golden touches around the table.

Throughout the year, my tablescaping experience evolved such that one of my favorite shots of each table was taken at the very end, when items were gathered up to be put back into the cupboards. I like the “put-away shots” as much as the actual table settings!

I’ll be creating and styling more pretty tables in 2018; I have two already planned for January! Hope you’ll pop back in to check them out!

PS – As this blog grows, you’ll always be able to get links to all the tablescapes by clicking on the category called “tablescapes” in the right-hand column of the blog. Easy, right?

I’m sharing my tablescape round-up at Tablescape Thursday, over on Susan’s blog “Between Naps on the Porch.”

Holiday tablescape: the Golden Glow of Christmas

This is my second Christmas tablescape this year. To see the first one, see my earlier post featuring Christmas Ribbon by World Bazaar.

This year, really for the first time ever I think, my Christmas decor seems kind of unified. I tried to stay loosely within a color scheme of pink, gold, and white (a touch of silver here and there could not be helped… “Silver and Gold,” after all…), and as I look around I feel a sense of comfort in the loveliness that surrounds me.

Not that there was ever anything wrong with un-unified… no, I loved the mish-mash of Christmases past when my daughter was little. Tree decorations were handmade, my collection of snowmen was growing, the living room had an almost-Victorian look to the handmade garlands while the bathroom was more of the woodland/”lodge-look.”

But this year it’s definitely more unified, and it feels almost like a hug – maybe that’s just because the furniture looks cozy covered in chenille bedspreads!

Anyway, I knew that I wanted to carry the pink and gold theme into a Christmas tablescape. But, where my tree and decor are mostly focused on pink, I wanted the table to really shimmer – to be rooted in gold. I had no idea how I was going to achieve that with what I had on hand, until I walked into a thrift store back in early December and found these show-stopping dinner plates.

No maker stamped on the back – just an indication that the amazing border and all the gold scrolling around it is 22k gold. Right then and there I knew they would be the basis of my Golden Christmas tablescape. The touch of pink comes from a single element – the glassware, also a thrift-store find, with handpainted poinsettias.

I’ll be honest – I thought the table looked “just okay” when I first stepped back and looked at it. That was on a Friday night – I had set it up with the intention of taking photographs on Saturday morning, in the daylight.

But I couldn’t resist lighting the candles, and when I snapped a few photos in the candlelight, the whole thing took my breath away – the gold was glinty and shimmering, just like I’d imagined. It was beautiful!

The next morning I snapped my first few photos with daylight filling the dollhouse, and it looked so pretty in the pictures that I could hardly believe this beautiful thing – this set table – was in my home. I know it sounds ridiculous to be so overcome by a simple tablescape set for a meal – but it was the very loveliness I had been hoping to create.

So with all that gushing out of the way, let me take you on a tour around the table!

The place setting includes the stunning thrift-store 22k gold-shouldered dinner plates and als0-thrifted gold-trimmed bowls by Stetson in the “American Beauty” pattern. Napkins are in a simple rose fold nestled in each bowl.

The glassware was also a thrift-store find: four hand-painted water goblets with lovely poinsettias in a deep coral pink and ivory.

Are you as surprised as I am to see that we have a different set of flatware on the table? For years now the only set I’ve owned has been my hard-working vintage Oneida Chandelier – a gift from my Aunt Hazel. But I’ve had gold-tone flatware on my thrifting list for quite awhile, and late this Fall I scored big with 26 pieces of the electroplated Americana Golden Heritage by International Silver. I was delighted to finally use it in a tablescape!

Every piece in lovely condition!

The flatware set also included a few serving pieces, so I have set them at the ends of the table along with Royal Worcester 8-inch plates in the “Golden Anniversary” pattern. These are actually part of two trio sets (cup, saucer and snack plate) that were also found at Goodwill.

For our centerpiece, again we are using inexpensive and thrifted items – the arrangement consists of a pretty FTD ivory sleigh with gold accents, a pair of interesting counter-weighted brass candlesticks, and two votive holders (actually toothpick holders) that are antique Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG – the predecessor of Depression Glass). Filler items include faux greenery and ornaments from my stash, and pretty plastic snowflake ornaments from Dollar Tree.

I love how this tablescape brings in the shimmer and sparkle of Christmas, and yet also practically glows in warm gold when the sun hits it just right.

Not just teacups on my tree

My 2017 “All Around the Christmas Tree” tour, part 2!

Last year I splurged right after Christmas on a pink flocked tree for use this year, and now that it’s all decked out I just don’t think it could be any prettier to look at. In a previous post I shared all the little “tea things” that I had placed on the tree, starting with the Royal Albert “Old Country Roses” cup and saucer that was a gift from my daughter.

In addition to tea things, the other type of ornament that seems to speak to my heart is simply what I call “critters” – woodland animals like squirrels and song birds. So I have added a few of those over the past couple of years as well, but usually in a very fanciful style… lots of white and sparkle. Here are a few of the critters gathered on my tree:

This deer got a sprig of feather boa to up the fancy quotient just a little.

I bought a small bag full of chubby little faux birds at a thrift store recently – here are a few of them:

This little squirrel was marked “shatter-proof” – that means he’s plastic. But he has the look of the old-world glass.

Here’s another squirrel, this one has a rhinestone scarf for added bling!

This shimmery peacock is not exactly a woodland creature, but he’s sure beautiful!

Another sweet little faux birdie…

My little Frog Prince is also new this year; he was found at Tuesday Morning and is made of glass. Apparently, frogs are considered good omens for success – in business, relationships, and other ventures – because they can only move forward and therefore are continually making progress. I’ve added him to my tree in hopes he will help keep my job-hunt brief!

Finally, also not a woodland creature but also quite beautiful is “Miss Thing” who sits at the top of the tree. (You have to say it sassy so it sounds like, “Miss Thang” – she definitely thinks she’s all that!)

Okay I might be the only person in Blogland who took you on not one, but TWO ornament-by-ornament tours of her tree… so thank you for indulging me! I hope your Christmas tree fills your heart with joy!

Christmas Ribbon tablescape

Christmas Ribbon china | Vintage Floral CottageY’all know my weakness is vintage dinnerware, right…? So three years ago, I noticed that a small second-hand store that I drive by every day had changed over their front window for the Christmas season. Front-and-center was a beautiful set of dinnerware – facing the street, right where I could see it.

One Saturday I ventured in to look at it – I was overdue for a visit anyway! The china was called Christmas Ribbon by World Bazaar. Not especially old, but it was service for eight. I could absolutely envision a lovely table using this pretty casual pattern, but while the asking price was reasonable at $50 for the set, it was more than I was willing to spend.

But the day after Christmas? This shop had a “50 percent off all Christmas” sign in the window… I’ve never turned my car around so fast in my life! Bought it all for $25… but by the following Christmas I had a vintage/antique booth (or two) and decided to try to sell half of it – service for four, at $25. I figured if I could make my money back on half of it, I could keep the other half for myself, free and clear.

Except it didn’t sell. So THIS year… I actually took time to set a pretty table with it – and it’s every bit as beautiful on the table as I thought it would be! It seemed to lend itself to a woodland feel, as the pattern features not only pretty red ribbon, but also holly leaves and berries, evergreen branches, and sweet little pine cones.

For a centerpiece, I used two little red metal lanterns – one was missing its base that holds the candle, so I improvised and set in a votive holder. The faux greenery was clipped from a bit of garland in my stash, and the burlap ribbon (also in stash) added to the natural feel of the table.

These chargers were used recently in my Thanksgiving table. They were a thrift-store find. The pretty placemats – which I think add a little sparkle to the casual feel of the table – were a gift from my daughter a few years ago.

Oh – except for the china! I had it listed on Facebook Marketplace, and the day after this photo shoot, I sold it – service for 8, for $50. It only took me three years to double my money! (Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but I might be having a bit of seller’s remorse.)
